MEDIA RELEASE – EXPLOSIVES TO FELL PLAYFORD B CHIMNEY

MEDIA RELEASE

19th January 2017

EXPLOSIVES TO FELL PLAYFORD B CHIMNEY

An 80m high concrete and brick chimney at the Augusta Power stations site will be demolished next week using explosive charges.

The demolition involves what is known as the Playford B stack and – weather permitting – will occur at 9am on Thursday January 25.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not the iconic 200m high Northern stack, which remains on schedule for demolition in April/May this year TBC)

The explosive charges are designed to weaken the base of the stack, enabling a controlled fall in a designated zone. Infrastructure in the adjacent Playford B switchyard has been removed to enable the safe felling to occur.

Specialist company Precision Demolition has been engaged by McMahon Services to undertake the felling activity. The stack does not contain asbestos.

Flinders Power and McMahons Services are coordinating the demolition with the relevant government agencies and emergency services to ensure the highest safety and environmental standards.

Additional information:

  •  An appropriate land exclusion zone will be strictly enforced by SA Police and Security Contractors.
  • A marine exclusion zone will be enforced by SA Police and access to Spencer Gulf in the immediate vicinity of Playford B will be restricted from 8:30am (25/1/18) for approximately one hour.
  • There is no accessible line of sight to this charge-felling event and no suitable public or media viewing area. (Footage will be released by Flinders Power/McMahon Services immediately following the event).

Please note that the use of the explosive charges will be audible to the public during the activity. Some localised dust may be generated during the activity and dust control measures will be enacted. If weather conditions on the day are not conducive to felling, the activity will be delayed.
