Media Release: Ash Storage area Topsoil Approval – 8 March 2017

Flinders Power receives approval to spread topsoil at power station site

Flinders Power has received approval from the relevant regulatory bodies to spread topsoil at the Port Augusta power station’s ash dam as part of the plan to rehabilitate the site.

Since January, soil has been excavated from an on-site ‘borrow pit’ and transported to the ash dam, in readiness for spreading. The spreading of topsoil in trial areas has proved successful. The approval follows a presentation of detailed proposals for the site by Flinders Power, alliance partner McMahon Services Australia, environmental consultants and a site contamination auditor to the Environment Protection Authority and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources.

Starting immediately, topsoil will be applied to the 270ha site in readiness for native vegetation to be established during the winter months. A diverse range of 20 local native species has been selected, being representative of the surrounding ecosystem. On advice from a specialist revegetation expert, six tonnes of seed will be spread over the area.

Flinders Power will continue to closely monitor dust throughout the rehabilitation works, using a combination of real-time dust monitoring equipment and visual observation. The company remains committed to ongoing engagement and communication with the community in relation to the rehabilitation plans.
